What Medicare Supplement
Health Plan Coverage Can Do For You

A Medicare supplement plan, also known as a Medigap plan, can help pay some of your healthcare expenses in Mesa AZ, such as copays, coinsurance, and deductibles by supplementing your original Medicare. These Medicare Supplement plans are sold by private insurance companies and requires a premium to be paid. Medigap does not cover prescription medications, so a prescription drug plan must be purchased separately.

Medigap plans are designed to cover a portion or all of the medical expenses for which an Original Medicare part A or part B beneficiary would otherwise have to pay out-of-pocket – expenses that are only partially covered by Medicare. Some Medigap plans also cover services that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S.

How Medigap Insurance Works

The majority of Medicare’s out-of-pocket costs are covered by these Medigap private insurance plans. If you choose this option, you will continue to receive coverage under original Medicare. After Medicare has disbursed payments for your claims, they will be forwarded automatically to your Medigap plan which will pay its share of your bill.

If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medigap policy, here’s what happens:

  • Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered health care costs.
  • Then, your Medigap policy pays its share.

As a Medicare enrollee, you may not purchase a Medigap policy unless you already have Medicare Part A or Part B plan. In addition, under Medicare supplement insurance Medigap, only one individual is covered – no joint policies are available. Therefore two separate policies are required for a married couple. In addition, this Medicare supplement may not be used with Medicare Advantage.

12 Things to Know about Medigap Plans

  1. A Medicare Supplement plan is different from a Medicare Advantage Plan. A Medicare Advantage plan is a way to get Medicare together with prescription drug coverage AND additional benefits, while a Medigap plan only supplements your Original Medicare benefits.
  2. Medicare Supplement Plans have standardized coverage options (Plans A through F, and K through N), but the premiums and pricing methods vary. Each policy with the same letter designation provides the same coverage, but the premiums can vary a lot by insurer.
  3. In Arizona, insurers can choose from three pricing methods for Medigap policies: issue-age policies, which base premiums on your age when you purchase the policy; attained-age policies, which can increase premiums each year because of your age; and community-rated policies, which are similar to issue-age policies but generally charge everyone the same rate regardless of age. Premiums for attained-age policies are likely to go up more than policies that are issue-age or community-rated.
  4. To be eligible for a Medigap plan, you must be 65 years or older, you must qualify for Medicare, and you must have Medicare Part A and Part B (also called Original Medicare).
  5. When you first turn 65 (during your Open Enrollment Period), or when you first leave employer creditable coverage (during your Guaranteed Issue period), you will automatically qualify for a Medicare supplement plan without answering health questions. Most any other time, you will likely have to answer health questions, which may disqualify you for Medigap coverage or cause your premiums to be higher.
  6. When you enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan, you must continue to pay your Medicare Part B monthly premium to the Social Security Administration (some exceptions apply for those with low income).
  7. Medicare Supplement plans sold after January 1, 2006 aren’t allowed to include prescription drug coverage. Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) coverage must be purchased separately for an additional monthly premium.
  8. You pay the private insurance company a monthly premium for your Medigap plan. You pay this monthly premium in addition to the monthly Part B premium that you pay to Medicare.
  9. A Medigap plan only covers one person. If you and your spouse both want Medicare supplement plan coverage, you’ll each have to buy separate policies, but some companies offer household discounts when purchased together.
  10. Any standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed renewable even if you have health problems. This means the insurance company can’t cancel your Medigap policy as long as you pay the premium.
  11. Your Medigap premiums will likely increase each year you own the policy.
  12. It’s illegal for anyone to sell you a Medicare supplement plan if you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, unless you’re switching back to Original Medicare.
